Well, hey there! You wanna know about them border collie mix dogs, huh? Alright, alright, I’ll tell ya what I know. I ain’t no fancy dog expert, mind you, just an old woman who’s seen a thing or two about dogs.
First off, what’s a border collie anyway? These here collies, they say they’re real smart. Like, smartest dogs around, some folks claim. They’re quick and jumpy, always gotta be doin’ somethin’. Good for herdin’ sheep and such, if you got sheep. I ain’t got no sheep, but I seen ’em work on TV. Amazing!

Now, when you mix a border collie with somethin’ else, that’s when things get interestin’. You could have a border collie mixed with a Lab, a golden retriever, a shepherd, heck, even a poodle! Why you’d mix a collie with a poodle, I dunno, but folks do it. Each mix is different, ya see? They get a little bit of this, a little bit of that.
- Border collie and Lab mix: Probably a good dog. Labs are friendly, collies are smart. Could be a handful, though, if they get too much energy.
- Border collie and golden retriever mix: Ooh, that sounds pretty! Goldens are so sweet. This mix might be a bit calmer than a pure collie, but still playful.
- Border collie and shepherd mix: Now that’s a workin’ dog! Both breeds are herders, so this mix would be real smart and needs a job to do. Don’t get one if you just gonna let it sit around all day.
Border collie mix puppies, they’re cute as buttons, lemme tell ya. But don’t let that fool ya. They’re gonna grow up, and they’re gonna need trainin’. Lots of trainin’. And exercise! These ain’t couch potato dogs, no sir. They need to run and play and use their brains. If you don’t give ’em somethin’ to do, they’ll find somethin’ to do, and you might not like it. Chewin’ on your shoes, diggin’ up the yard, barkin’ at the mailman…you know the drill.
Trainin’ these dogs ain’t always easy. They’re smart, like I said, but they can also be stubborn. You gotta be patient and consistent. Start ’em young, and don’t give up. Use treats, use toys, use whatever works. But be firm, gotta let ’em know who’s boss. Otherwise, they’ll walk all over ya.
Now, about health problems. Every dog can get sick, ain’t nothin’ you can do about that. But some breeds are prone to certain things. Collies, I heard, can have eye problems and hip problems. So if you gettin’ a mix, you gotta ask the breeder about that. Make sure the parents were healthy, you know? Don’t wanna get stuck with a sick puppy.
Are border collies good family dogs? Well, that depends. Like I said, they need exercise and trainin’. If you got kids who can run around with ’em, that’s good. But if the dog’s got too much energy and the kids are little, it might not be a good match. You don’t want the dog knockin’ the kids over, right? And you gotta teach the kids how to treat the dog right, too. No pullin’ tails or pokin’ eyes. It goes both ways.
Can you leave a border collie alone? Not for long, I’d say. They get lonely and bored, and that’s when they get into trouble. If you work all day, maybe a border collie mix ain’t the right dog for ya. Or maybe you gotta get two, so they can keep each other company. But then you got two mouths to feed and two times the energy to deal with! Think about it carefully, I’m tellin’ ya.
So, there ya have it. That’s what I know about border collie mixes. They can be wonderful dogs, but they ain’t for everybody. Do your research, talk to breeders, and make sure you’re ready for the commitment. A dog ain’t a toy, it’s a livin’ creature that needs love and care. And food. Don’t forget the food!

Last thing, if you get a border collie mix, or any dog for that matter, give it a good home. Love it, feed it, play with it, and take care of it. That’s all they ask for.
