Recently, my dog started having some allergy issues. I’ve been trying different things, and it’s been a real pain in the neck! So I started looking into changing up his diet, and I stumbled upon this idea of white fish with sweet potato. Sounded interesting, right?
First, I went to the local pet store. Browsing around, I saw a bunch of fancy brands like Zignature and ORIJEN. They had these “limited ingredient” formulas and “six-fish” stuff. I even saw something from Blue Buffalo. Honestly, it was all a bit overwhelming. The prices were pretty steep, too! I mean, I love my dog, but I also gotta eat, you know?
Then I thought, “Why not just make it myself?” I mean, how hard could it be? I do some cooking for myself, so I thought I’d give it a shot for my furry friend.
So, off to the grocery store I went. I picked up some cod, since I read online that it’s okay for dogs. You gotta make sure it’s fully cooked, though, no raw fish for pups! I also grabbed a few sweet potatoes. I’ve heard they’re good for dogs – low in calories and have vitamins and stuff.
Preparation Process
When I got home, I preheated the oven to like, 400 degrees Fahrenheit. I washed the sweet potatoes and poked some holes in them with a fork, just like I do when I bake them for myself.
- Toss sweet potatoes in the oven.
- Bake until they are soft, like an hour.
- While waiting, I cooked the cod.
- Make sure no seasoning, just plain fish.
- Boil some water, and drop the fish in, it only took about 10-15 minutes.
Once the fish was cooked, I made sure to shred it up real good, checking for any tiny bones. Safety first!
After the sweet potatoes were done and cooled down a bit, I scooped out the insides and mashed them up. I mixed the mashed sweet potato with the shredded fish. Looked kinda weird, but hey, it’s dog food.
I started by giving my dog just a little bit of this concoction, mixing it with his regular food. I didn’t want to upset his stomach. The next day, I gave him a bit more.
It’s been a few days now, and he seems to be doing okay with it! His allergies are not totally gone yet, but I think it’s helping.
So, yeah, that’s my little adventure with making white fish and sweet potato dog food. It was cheaper than buying the expensive stuff, and I know exactly what’s in it. Plus, my dog seems to like it, which is all that really matters. It’s a bit of work, but if it helps my dog’s allergies, it’s totally worth it!
