Okay, so, I’ve been trying to make my own cat food lately. My cat, Tito, he’s a picky little guy. He eats most things, but he turns his nose up at tuna, of all things! Can you believe it? Anyway, I wanted to try some recipes with fish, ’cause I heard it’s good for them, and I figured I’d share my little adventure with you all.

First off, I did some digging around, you know, checking online and stuff. It turns out there are tons of different fish you can use. I found out about this fish called Acadian Redfish, which is apparently also known as Ocean Perch. It is said to be packed with good stuff like vitamins and minerals and is low in fat. Sounded pretty good to me!

Then I learned that fish is generally a good source of protein for cats. That’s great, but also keep in mind that as long as your cat isn’t allergic to fish and the fish is part of a nutritionally complete diet, it is okay. I’ve heard that roasted, grilled, or poached salmon is a healthier option for cats. And remember don’t ever season the salmon or add other flavorings, dressings, or ingredients.

Getting Started

So, with that little bit of knowledge, I headed to the grocery store. I decided to grab some Acadian Redfish and some salmon ’cause why not give both a try? I felt pretty good with my choices!

  • First batch: I started with the Acadian Redfish. I grabbed about half a pound of it. Make sure to get the freshest fish.
  • Cooking it up: I decided to bake it plain, no seasoning or anything, just to keep it simple for Tito. Popped it in the oven at 350 degrees for about 15-20 minutes, until it was cooked through and flaky.
  • Making it into food: Once it cooled down, I shredded the fish with a fork, making sure there were no bones. Then, I mixed it with some cooked sweet potato and a bit of plain, cooked rice. I figured the veggies and rice would add some fiber and stuff.

Tito’s Verdict

Tito seemed pretty interested when I put the bowl down. He sniffed it for a while, then took a tentative bite. He ate the whole thing! I was so excited, I felt like a master chef. I think the freshness of the fish really made a difference.

  • Second batch: Next up was the salmon. I did the same thing, baked it plain. This time, I just mixed it with some cooked carrots, ’cause I read somewhere that cats can have carrots.
  • Another win: Tito gobbled this one up too! I couldn’t believe it, two for two. Maybe it’s just the novelty, but hey, I’ll take it!

What I Learned

This whole thing was easier than I thought it would be. I mean, cooking fish is pretty simple. The main thing is to make sure it’s cooked properly and there are no bones. Also, I realized that it’s probably best to try different fish and veggie combos to keep things interesting for your cat.

I’m definitely going to keep experimenting with different recipes. It’s kind of fun, and it feels good to know exactly what’s going into Tito’s food. Plus, he seems to really like it, so that’s a win-win. I might even try adding some broth or something next time, just to see what happens. Homemade cat food journey, here we go! I do all these things just want to make sure my cat is healthy and happy. I am sure you are the same!

Hope this helps anyone out there thinking about trying to make their own cat food. It’s totally doable, even if you’re not a great cook. Just do your research, keep it simple, and see what your cat likes. Happy cooking, everyone!
