Alright, so I found myself with a bit of time on my hands the other day, and you know how it is, idle hands and all that. I’d been seeing these bulldog things everywhere, and they’ve got a certain charm, haven’t they? Grumpy but sort of endearing. So, I thought, why not try and make a little bulldog toy? Just a little something to fiddle with, a small project.
What I Scrounged Up
Didn’t want to make a big fuss, so I just rooted around for stuff I already had. It’s amazing what you can find when you actually look. Here’s what I ended up using:

- Some old grey felt – you know, the kind you get from craft stores. Had a decent chunk of it.
- A smaller piece of black felt for the nose and maybe some patches if I felt fancy.
- Stuffing from an old cushion that was destined for the bin anyway. Waste not, want not!
- A needle and some sturdy thread. My sewing skills are, let’s say, functional.
- Scissors, obviously.
Nothing too complicated, just the basics really.
The Actual Making Of It
So, I started by sketching out a shape. No pattern, just pure guesswork. It looked a bit like a potato with legs at first, but I figured that’s what bulldogs sort of resemble anyway. I cut out two main body pieces from the grey felt. Then four stumpy leg bits, and a couple of floppy ear shapes.
Sewing the main body wasn’t too bad. I did it inside out, then flipped it. The usual stuff. But then came the legs. Oh, those little legs were a pain. Trying to attach them neatly and get them to look even remotely like they could support a bulldog, even a tiny felt one, was a challenge. My fingers felt like sausages trying to do delicate work. There was a bit of muttering involved, I won’t lie.
Once the basic shell was done, I started stuffing it. Packed it in pretty tight to give it some heft. I tried to pinch and sew some wrinkles around the face area as I went, to give it that classic bulldog frown. It sort of worked. Then I stitched on the black felt nose and used some black thread to make a grumpy little mouth and two simple eyes. Didn’t go for anything fancy with the eyes, just a few stitches to suggest them.
How It Turned Out
Well, it’s definitely a bulldog. Or, at least, it’s my interpretation of one. It’s a bit lopsided, one ear is slightly perkier than the other, and its legs are definitely not regulation standard. But you know what? I quite like it. It’s got character. It looks like it’s seen a few things, a bit world-weary, which is probably how I felt after wrestling with those tiny felt pieces.
It’s not something you’d buy in a shop, that’s for sure. But there’s a certain satisfaction in making something with your own hands, even if it’s not perfect. Especially if it’s not perfect, sometimes. This little fella is now sitting on my desk, judging my questionable life choices. It’s a good reminder that sometimes it’s just good to make stuff, to not just consume. Kept me off the internet for a few hours too, which is always a bonus. A simple project, but a good one.
