Okay, let’s talk about getting insurance for my Corgi, Winston. It wasn’t something I thought much about at first, honestly.
Getting Started
So, Winston’s my little dude, full of energy, you know how Corgis are. Low rider, big personality. Anyway, I started thinking about insurance after my neighbour’s dog, a perfectly healthy Lab, suddenly needed some big, expensive surgery. Cost them thousands. That got me spooked. I looked at Winston, with his long back and stubby legs, doing his usual zoomies around the living room, almost wiping out on the rug. My heart jumped a bit.

First thing I did was hop online. Typed in “corgi insurance” or something like that. Whoa. So many companies popped up. It felt like a flood of information, all these different plans, confusing words like ‘deductible’ and ‘annual limit’ and ‘co-pay’. Honestly, my eyes glazed over pretty quick.
Digging In
I realized just randomly picking one wasn’t the way. So, I decided to get organized. Sort of. I grabbed a notebook. Started trying to compare maybe three or four companies that seemed popular or had decent reviews.
What I looked for:
- Coverage for accidents – like if Winston decides to jump off the couch wrong.
- Coverage for illnesses – tummy bugs, ear infections, the usual stuff.
- Hereditary condition coverage – This felt really important for a Corgi. I read they can have back issues, hip problems sometimes. Didn’t want that excluded.
- How much I’d have to pay first (deductible).
- How much they’d pay in total per year (annual limit).
- What wasn’t covered (exclusions). The fine print here was tiny!
Talked to my vet too, just asked casually what companies they saw most often or if they had any general advice. They couldn’t recommend one specific company, obviously, but they did say getting something was better than nothing, especially for breeds known for certain issues.
Making the Choice and Signing Up
After staring at my messy notes and comparing quotes, I finally settled on one. It seemed to have a good balance – decent coverage for the Corgi-specific stuff without costing an absolute fortune each month. It wasn’t the cheapest, wasn’t the most expensive.
Filling out the actual application online was pretty straightforward. Put in Winston’s name, age, breed (Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the best kind, obviously). Had to answer questions about his health history, which was easy because he was still young and hadn’t had any major problems, thankfully. Uploaded a vet record or something, I think. Took maybe 15 minutes.
The Waiting Game and Peace of Mind
Then there was this waiting period. Like, the coverage didn’t start instantly, especially for illnesses. That part made me a bit nervous. I kept watching Winston like a hawk, thinking “Don’t get sick now! Don’t do anything stupid!”.

Finally got the email confirmation and the policy documents. Phew. Felt like a weight lifted. I printed them out, stuck them in a folder. Done.
Honestly, I haven’t had to use it yet, knock on wood. But just knowing it’s there makes a huge difference. My old dog, years ago, a lovely mutt, had some health scares later in life, and we didn’t have insurance back then. Every vet visit was stressful, always worrying about the bill. It sucked. So now, with Winston covered, I feel like I can handle whatever happens without that same financial panic. It just lets me enjoy my little loaf without quite as much ‘what if’ anxiety.
