Alright folks, let me tell you about my weekend project – finding the perfect name for my new German Shepherd pup. I mean, this is a BIG deal, right? You can’t just call a majestic creature like a German Shepherd “Fido”. That’s just… wrong.
First thing I did? Brainstorm. I grabbed a notebook, a coffee, and sat down with my girlfriend. We started throwing out names. Seriously, some of them were awful. Like, REALLY awful. We quickly realized we needed a system.

So, phase two: research. I hit the internet hard. Googled “cool dog names for german shepherds”, “strong dog names”, “german dog names” – you name it, I searched it. I even looked up German mythology. I was determined to find something unique and fitting.
I compiled a list. It was HUGE. Like, hundreds of names. I categorized them too: traditional German names (like Gunther, Elsa), strong-sounding names (like Ranger, Athena), and just plain cool names (like Maverick, Shadow).
Here’s a taste of what was on the list:
- Traditional German:
- Gunther
- Heidi
- Elsa
- Otto
- Greta
- Strong Sounding:
- Ranger
- Athena
- Zeus
- Freya
- Titan
- Cool Names:
- Maverick
- Shadow
- Ghost
- Blade
- Echo
Next up: Shortlisting. This was tough. We had to be brutal. We eliminated anything too common, too silly, or that just didn’t “feel” right for the dog’s personality (which, admittedly, we hadn’t fully discovered yet, but you get the idea).
The final contenders: After much debate, we narrowed it down to five names: Kaiser, Raven, Atlas, Luna, and Hunter.
The testing phase: We actually started using these names around the pup. Seeing how he reacted, how they sounded when we called him, etc.
And the winner is…

Atlas!
Why Atlas? It sounds strong, it’s not too common, and it just… fits. He’s a big, sturdy pup, and Atlas, holding up the world, just seemed perfect. Plus, it’s easy to say and he responds well to it.
The whole process took a few days. It sounds silly, maybe, but I wanted to get it right. A dog’s name is important! It’s part of their identity.
My advice if you’re naming a dog? Do your research, make a list, and don’t be afraid to try out the names before you commit. And most importantly, pick something you love!
So, yeah, that was my weekend. Naming a dog. A very important and fulfilling weekend, I might add!
