So, I’d been thinking about getting a cat for a while. Did a bit of reading, you know, casual stuff online. I always liked the sleek look of Siamese cats, really striking. But then you hear stories about how loud they can be, needing constant attention. Not sure I was ready for that level of commitment, energy-wise. Then I stumbled upon Russian Blues. Gorgeous cats, elegant, silver-blue coat, and supposedly quieter, more reserved. That sounded more my speed.
I wasn’t actively looking for a specific crossbreed, wasn’t even sure that was really a ‘thing’ people aimed for. It just sort of happened. I was browsing local rescue sites, just seeing who needed a home. Saw this listing for a young adult cat described as a “possible Russian Blue mix”. The picture caught my eye – definitely had that blue coat, but a bit more slender, maybe, than the stocky Russian Blues I’d seen pictures of. Had these really piercing eyes, though maybe not the bright green typical of a purebred RB, more of a blue-green.

Meeting the Little Guy
Decided to go meet him. When I first got there, he was super shy. Definitely channeling that reserved Russian Blue vibe. Hid under a chair, wouldn’t make eye contact. Took a good twenty minutes of me just sitting quietly before he even poked his head out. But then, curiosity seemed to win. He slowly came out, did a little inspection tour of my shoes, my bag. He had this funny little chirp, not quite a full Siamese yowl, but definitely more vocal than I expected from the RB side.
Something just clicked. He wasn’t exactly what I’d pictured, neither purely one thing nor the other, but he had character. I decided to take him home.
Living with a Mix
Settling in took time. The first few days, he was a shadow, mostly hiding. But slowly, his personality started to bloom. And it’s fascinating, really. He’s got this weird mix of traits:
- He’s definitely reserved with new people. If friends come over, he usually vanishes. Classic Russian Blue move.
- But with me? He can be quite demanding! Follows me around, chirps for attention, especially around meal times. That feels more Siamese.
- He’s smart. Learns routines quickly, figured out how to nudge the cupboard door where his treats are kept. Needs stuff to do, or he gets bored and maybe a bit mischievous. I got him puzzle toys, and he actually uses them.
- Playfulness is there, but in bursts. He’ll go from napping peacefully to suddenly batting a toy mouse like crazy for ten minutes, then back to napping. Not the constant ‘on’ switch I associated with Siamese.
- His coat is thick and blue like an RB, but his face shape is a bit more wedge-like, leaning Siamese. And those eyes stayed that interesting blue-green shade.
He’s not particularly clingy in a lap-cat way, most of the time. He prefers to be nearby, supervising, rather than right on top of me. But he has his moments, usually late at night, where he’ll suddenly decide my lap is the best place ever. It’s like he carefully considers both sides of his heritage before deciding how to act.
Honestly, it’s been a journey figuring him out. He keeps me on my toes. You don’t just get a cat; you get to know this unique little individual. This mix wasn’t something I planned, but watching his combined traits play out every day is pretty interesting. He’s definitely his own cat, not just a checklist of two different breeds. And yeah, wouldn’t trade the little guy.
