My Hunt for Pet Deals Here in CT
Alright, so the other day, I realized Barnaby, my old golden retriever, was running low on his special joint-support food. That stuff isn’t cheap, you know? And I thought, man, there’s gotta be a better way than just hitting the big chain pet store again. I live out here in Connecticut, and while it’s nice, things can add up, especially with pets.
So, I decided to make a real effort this time. Like, actually hunt for a bargain. First thing I did, grabbed the local Sunday paper ads. Flipped through ’em. Saw the usual suspects – PetSmart, Petco – same old prices, maybe a dollar off here or there. Nothing really grabbing me.

Then I thought, okay, gotta go beyond the obvious. I remembered this smaller, independent pet shop a town over. Haven’t been there in ages. So, I drove over. Nice little place, smelled like hay and critters. The owner was friendly, but honestly, his prices on the fancy food were even higher! Good for unique toys though, have to remember that. But not for my main goal.
I was getting a bit discouraged. Started thinking maybe this whole bargain hunting thing for pet stuff was a waste of time. But then, while getting groceries later that day, I saw a community bulletin board near the exit. People post all sorts of things there. Tacked between a lost cat poster and someone selling firewood, I saw a little handwritten note!
Someone was moving and selling off unopened pet supplies! It listed a few things, including a couple of bags of dog food – not Barnaby’s exact brand, but a similar quality one I knew he could eat. And get this, they listed it for like, half price. Just needed it gone.
I called the number right there in the store. Met the person later that afternoon. Super nice lady, downsizing for a move to Florida. She had exactly what she advertised, bags were sealed tight, expiration dates way out. Ended up buying two big bags of that good quality food for what I normally pay for one. Score!
It wasn’t exactly news, but it was definitely a bargain find, right here in CT. Took some digging, sure. More effort than just clicking a button online or walking into the closest big store. But hey, it worked.
What I Figured Out
So, this little adventure taught me a couple of things about finding pet deals around here:
- Check local spots: Not just pet stores, but grocery store bulletin boards, maybe even town Facebook groups (if you use those, just describing the idea here). You never know what pops up locally.
- Think outside the box: Sometimes people moving, or maybe even farm supply stores if you have those nearby, can have deals you wouldn’t expect.
- It takes time: It wasn’t instant. I had to actually go places, look around, make a call. It’s not always convenient, but the savings can be real.
So yeah, that was my recent experience trying to save a buck on pet stuff in Connecticut. Sometimes you just gotta put in a little legwork. Barnaby’s happily munching away on his slightly-different-but-still-good food, and my wallet’s a little happier too.
