Okay, so my German Shepherd, Rex, had a bit of a rough week. It all started last Tuesday, I think. I noticed his poop wasn’t looking too good – kinda soft and mushy. Didn’t think too much of it at first, figured maybe he ate something weird in the yard.

But then, Wednesday rolled around, and it was full-blown diarrhea. Yikes! I immediately started worrying. Rex is usually a pretty healthy guy, so this was unusual. I remembered reading somewhere that you should withhold food for a bit when they have diarrhea, so I skipped his dinner that night.

  • First thing I did: No food for Rex. Water only!

Thursday morning, still no improvement. In fact, it might have been a little worse. I called the vet, and they told me to bring him in if he wasn’t better by the next day or if he started showing other symptoms like vomiting or lethargy.

My Worry Increases

I spent the whole day keeping a close eye on him. He seemed a little down, but thankfully, no vomiting. I offered him plain boiled chicken and rice in a small amount, which is what the vet had recommended over the phone as something easy to digest.

  • Boiled Chicken
  • Plain White Rice.

He ate it, which was a good sign, but his poop was still…well, let’s just say it wasn’t pretty. By Friday, I was really getting anxious. I decided not to wait any longer and took him to the vet.

The Vet Visit

The vet did a thorough check-up, asked me a bunch of questions about what he’d eaten, and took a stool sample (yuck!). Thankfully, the tests came back negative for anything serious like parasites or infections. The vet figured it was probably just a dietary indiscretion – basically, Rex ate something he shouldn’t have.

The vet prescribed some probiotics to help his gut get back to normal and recommended continuing with the bland diet for a few more days. She also suggested adding a little pumpkin puree to his food, which is supposed to help firm things up.

The Next Step.

  • Probiotics.
  • Keep the bland diet.
  • Pumpkin puree.

I followed her instructions to the letter, and slowly but surely, Rex started improving. It took a few days, but his poop gradually returned to normal. Phew! I was so relieved. I learned my lesson, though – I’m going to be much more careful about what Rex has access to in the yard from now on!
