Okay, so I’ve got a corgi, a fluffy little loaf named Winston. And let me tell you, finding the right size crate for him was a journey. I wanted him to be comfy, but not have so much space that he’d think one corner was a bathroom. Not ideal.
My Corgi Crate Size Adventure
First, I measured Winston. I had him stand up, and I measured him from the tip of his nose to the base of his tail (not the fluffy end!). Then, I measured from the floor to the top of his head while he was sitting. It was like a mini photoshoot, and he was not amused.

The general advice I found online was “add 2-4 inches to your dog’s measurements.” Sounded easy enough. Winston ended up being about 22 inches long and 16 inches tall.
So, I figured I needed a crate that was about 24-26 inches long, right? Wrong! My first attempt was a 24-inch crate. It was way too small! Winston looked like he was stuffed in a sausage casing. He could barely turn around. Back it went.
Next, I tried a 30-inch crate. This one was much better. He could stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. There wasn’t a ton of extra space, which I think is good for crate training. He seems to feel secure in it, like it’s his little den.
Here’s what I learned:
- Measuring is key, but don’t be afraid to go a bit bigger than the minimum recommendation, especially if your corgi is still growing.
- Consider your corgi’s build. Some corgis are longer or stockier than others.
- Observe your dog in the crate. If they look cramped, it’s probably too small.
Finally I get the 30-inch crate! It made Winston feel like living in a big house. I would recommend the 30-inch crate for your lovely corgi!
