Okay, so I’ve been obsessed with Ragdoll cats lately. I mean, who isn’t? Those big blue eyes and that fluffy fur… But I really wanted to dive into all the different color variations they come in. It’s way more complex than I initially thought!
I started by just browsing pictures online. You know, the usual – Google Images, Pinterest, breeder websites. I quickly realized there’s a whole world of patterns and colors beyond the classic “seal point” look.

My Deep Dive into Colors and Patterns
First, I tried to make sense of the basic color groups.
- Seal: This is the dark brown, almost black, points. Super common and what I originally pictured when I thought “Ragdoll.”
- Chocolate: A lighter, warmer brown than seal. It’s more of a milk chocolate color.
- Blue: This is actually a greyish-blue. It’s a dilute version of seal.
- Lilac: A dilute of chocolate, so it’s a pale, almost pinkish-grey.
- Red: Okay, this one surprised me. It’s more of an orange or ginger color.
- Cream: A dilute of red, so it’s a very pale, buff color.
Then, I discovered there are different patterns!
- Colorpoint: This is the classic look, where the “points” (ears, face, paws, tail) are darker than the body.
- Mitted: Like colorpoint, but with white “mittens” on the front paws and white boots on the back legs. So cute!
- Bicolor: This one has more white. The face has an inverted “V” of white, and the legs and belly are usually white too.
- Lynx: I have tabby markings in pointed area.
- Tortie:I have mixed color in pointed area.
Putting It All Together
My next step was combining the colors and patterns. It gets crazy! You can have a “Seal Mitted Ragdoll” or a “Blue Bicolor Ragdoll.” I spent hours looking at photos, trying to identify each * does take a little while to understand.I even printed some reference charts to have it.
It’s like a whole secret language! But it’s so fascinating to see how all these different combinations create such unique and beautiful cats. I think I’m officially hooked. I’m considering getting another Ragdoll now, just to have a different color variety! I am also planning to share my founds with my friend, she is considering get a ragdoll recently!
