Okay, so I’ve been getting a TON of questions about my Maine Coon, Luna. Specifically, people keep asking, “do Maine Coon cats shed a lot?” So, I figured I’d just share my experience, you know, what I’ve actually seen and dealt with.

First off, I got Luna as a tiny little kitten. I mean, TINY. Even then, she had this fluffy, soft fur. It wasn’t super long yet, but you could tell it was gonna be something. I started by brushing her a couple of times a week, just to get her used to it. I used one of those soft bristle brushes, nothing fancy.

Do Maine Coon Cats Shed? Heres the Truth About Fur!

The Fur Begins…

As she grew, oh boy, the fur really started to come in. It got longer, thicker, and you could see different layers. I read somewhere that they have like, multiple coats or something? All I know is, it’s a LOT of fur. And yeah, that’s when the shedding really started to become noticeable.

I upped the brushing to pretty much every day. I also switched to one of those metal comb things – I think it’s called a grooming rake? It gets down deeper into the fur. And let me tell you, I pull out CLUMPS of fur. Seriously, it’s like I could make another cat out of it.

  • Brushing: Almost daily, especially during spring and fall.
  • Tools: Started with a soft brush, now use a metal grooming rake.
  • Vacuuming: My vacuum cleaner is my best friend. I’m vacuuming way more than I used to.
  • Bathing: It’s generally said not to bathe them too often, about two to three times a year.

I also noticed more hair on my clothes, my furniture… everywhere, really. So, yeah, the short answer is YES, they do shed. It’s not like, a little bit of shedding. It’s a considerable amount. Especially, I’ve found, around spring and fall – I guess when they’re changing their coats for the season.

But, honestly? It’s worth it. Luna’s such a sweetheart, and her fur, even though it gets everywhere, is so beautiful and soft. I just think of the extra vacuuming as part of the deal, you know? It’s like, you get this amazing, fluffy cat, and you also get a lot of fur. It’s a package deal!
