Okay, so I’ve been wanting a cat for, like, forever. And not just any cat, I had my heart set on a Russian Blue. Those silver coats and green eyes? Gorgeous! So, the hunt began. I literally typed “adopt a russian blue cat near me” into the search bar and crossed my fingers.
First Steps: The Online Search
First things first, I started with the obvious: Petfinder and Adopt-a-Pet. I spent hours scrolling through pages of adorable cats, filtering by breed, age, and location. The struggle was real. There were tons of cute kitties, but not many Russian Blues, especially close by.

- Petfinder: Browsed, filtered, and bookmarked a few possibilities, but most were too far.
- Adopt-a-Pet: Similar story. Lots of mixed breeds, but not many purebreds nearby.
I was trying to be realistic. I know purebreds, especially ones like Russian Blues, are harder to find in shelters.
Digging Deeper: Local Shelters & Rescues
Next up, I decided to check out the websites of local animal shelters and rescue organizations. I figured maybe they wouldn’t always update the big pet adoption sites. I made a list of, like, five shelters within a reasonable driving distance and started browsing their individual websites.
This was a bit more time-consuming, but I felt like I was being more thorough. Still, mostly mixed breeds. I even considered a couple of cats that were maybe part Russian Blue, you know, based on their looks. You start to get a little desperate after a while!
Expanding the Search (and Maybe My Budget)
Okay, so the “near me” part was proving to be a challenge. I broadened my search radius a bit. I also started looking into breed-specific rescues. This is where things got interesting. I found a couple of organizations dedicated to Russian Blues, but they were further away, and some of them had pretty strict adoption requirements (understandable, but still…).
I also started to entertain the idea (just a little!) of maybe, possibly, contacting a breeder. I know, I know, “adopt, don’t shop,” but I was getting a little discouraged. I just did some preliminary research, though. No actual contacting… yet.
Contact! (Sort Of)
I finally found a promising lead! A local shelter, about an hour away, had a cat listed as a “Russian Blue mix.” She was adorable! Grey fur, green eyes… the whole shebang. I immediately filled out an adoption application online. Fingers crossed so hard right now!
I also sent out some inquiries to a couple of the Russian Blue rescue groups, even though they were farther away. Just to see what the process was like, you know? Playing the field.

Waiting Game
Now, it’s just the waiting game. Waiting to hear back about the application, waiting to see if the rescue groups have any available cats… It’s agonizing! I’m constantly checking my email and refreshing the shelter’s website. I’ll keep you updated on how it all turns out!
The dream is still alive, though. One day, I’ll have my own fluffy, silver, green-eyed companion. It’s just taking a little (okay, a lot) more effort than I initially thought.
