Okay, so I’ve got this super hyper dog, right? A total chew-monster. Everything I’ve ever bought him, he destroys in, like, five minutes. So, I decided I’d try to make him a durable dog rope toy. I figured, how hard could it be?

Gathering Supplies

First, I needed some rope. I didn’t want to use anything that could be easily shredded or that he might swallow, so it had to be something tough.

Durable Dog Rope Toy: Best Choices for Tough Chewers!
  • Went down to the local hardware store.
  • Grabbed a thick, natural fiber rope – I think it was sisal. Felt pretty sturdy.

The Braiding Process

I wanted to braid, after all my dog’s mouth is very big, so I:

  • I cut three long strands of the rope. Made them way longer than I thought I’d need, because, you know, braiding shortens things.
  • Tied the three strands together at one end with a super tight knot. I mean, I really reefed on it.
  • Then I started braiding. Just like braiding hair, you know? Over, under, over, under.
  • Kept going and going. My hands started to hurt a little, not gonna lie, that rope was rough.

Finishing Touches

Got to the end, and tied another super-duper tight knot at that end. Again, pulled it as hard as I could.

The Test

  • Gave the finished rope to my dog.
  • He went absolutely nuts for it.
  • Started chewing and tugging.
  • It is still a work in progress. My dog is still happily chomping away.

So, yeah, that’s how I made a (hopefully) durable dog rope toy. It wasn’t fancy, but it did the job, cost me next to nothing, and kept my dog entertained.
