Okay, so I’ve got two dogs and a cat, and keeping the toilet clean is a constant battle, but I’m also super paranoid about using anything that could hurt them. I mean, those little guys will drink out of the toilet if you let them! So, I did some digging and experimenting to find a pet-safe toilet bowl cleaner that actually works. Here’s what I did:
My DIY Toilet Bowl Cleaner Journey
First, I ditched all those harsh commercial cleaners. Seriously, the warnings on those bottles are scary! I wanted something natural and safe, but it still needed to get the job done. You know, get rid of those nasty rings and stains.

I started by researching online, looking for recipes that used ingredients I already had at home. I found a bunch of different options, but many seemed like they’d require a chemistry degree, so i picked the simplest one!
- I grabbed a spray bottle. Any old one will do, just make sure it’s clean.
- I poured in about a cup of white vinegar. I just use the cheap stuff, nothing fancy.
- Then, I added about a half cup of baking soda. Watch out, it’ll fizz up!
- After mixing, I added 10 drops or so of tea tree oil. It’s naturally antibacterial and smells pretty good.
- Finally, I added some water. I filled the bottle until it was about 3/4 of the way full.
I gave the bottle a good shake to mix everything up. Then, I sprayed the mixture liberally around the inside of the toilet bowl, making sure to get under the rim. I let it sit for a good 30 minutes. I figured the longer it sat, the better it would work. I’m all about making it easy, not necessarily fast, so it may need more time according to others.
After the waiting game, I took my regular toilet brush and scrubbed everything down. I was pleasantly surprised! The stains and gunk came off pretty easily. I flushed the toilet a couple of times to rinse everything away.
The toilet looked clean, and more importantly, I felt good knowing that I hadn’t used anything that could harm my furry friends. It’s not as “instant” as some of those chemical cleaners, but honestly, I’m okay with a little extra scrubbing if it means keeping my pets safe. I’ve been using this mixture for a few months now, and it’s been working great!
