Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get more involved with the local dog community, and I stumbled upon the Five Valley Kennel Club. I figured, why not? Let’s dive in and see what it’s all about.
Getting Started
First things first, I needed to figure out what this club actually does. I did a bit of digging around, you know, the usual online search. Turns out, they’re all about dog shows, obedience training, and just generally connecting dog lovers. Sounds pretty cool, right?

My First Event
I saw they had an upcoming obedience class, a basic one for beginners – perfect for me and my somewhat unruly golden retriever, Max. We showed up, a little nervous, not gonna lie. There were all sorts of dogs there, big and small, fluffy and sleek. Max was immediately distracted, of course.
The Training Itself
The instructor was great, super patient. She showed us the basics: sit, stay, come, heel. It was, uh, a work in progress. Max got the “sit” down pretty quickly (treats helped!), but “stay”? Not so much. He’d stay for maybe two seconds before his nose led him off on a new adventure.
We practiced, and practiced, and practiced some more. Other dog owners were there, offering tips and encouragement. It was actually really nice to see everyone helping each other out.
The Social Side
- Meeting other dog people: This was a big plus. I chatted with a few folks who had similar breeds and we swapped stories about our dogs’ quirks.
- Getting advice: One woman gave me a great tip about dealing with Max’s leash pulling. Seriously, a game-changer!
- Feeling part of something: It was just nice to be around other people who “get” the whole dog obsession.
The Takeaway (So Far!)
It’s been a few weeks now, and we’re still going to the classes. Max is… improving. Slowly. But it’s not just about the training, is it? It’s about spending time with my dog, meeting new people, and being part of a community. I’m thinking about checking out some of their other events, maybe even a dog show – though I doubt Max is ready for that kind of spotlight just yet! I Will Keep going next time, it is fun!
