Okay, so a bunch of you have been asking about what I feed my dog, especially since he’s got such a sensitive stomach. Well, after a ton of trial and error, we finally landed on something that works wonders: wholehearted hydrolyzed salmon dog food. Let me tell you the whole story.
The Search Begins
It all started when my pup started having, um, issues. You know, loose stools, occasional vomiting, the works. It was awful, and I felt so bad for him! We tried a few different “sensitive stomach” kibbles from the pet store, but nothing seemed to make a lasting difference. Some would work for a week, then BAM, back to square one.

So after many times,I take my dog to see Vet.
Vet Visit and Recommendation
My vet suggested we might be dealing with a food allergy. Common culprits are chicken and beef, she said. She recommended trying a novel protein, something my dog hadn’t really eaten before, and suggested salmon. She also brought up the idea of a “hydrolyzed” protein diet.
Honestly, I was a bit overwhelmed.
What is Hydrolyzed Protein?
The vet explained that hydrolyzing a protein means breaking it down into super tiny pieces. This way, the dog’s immune system is less likely to recognize it as an allergen and react to it. It’s like tricking the body into accepting the food.
Finding the Right Food
I started researching, and let me tell you, there aren’t a ton of hydrolyzed salmon options out there. I finally found “Wholehearted Hydrolyzed Salmon.” I liked that it was grain-free (another potential issue for some dogs), and the ingredient list seemed pretty decent.
The Transition Period
Slow and steady wins the race! That’s what I learned when switching dog foods. I started by mixing a tiny bit of the new food with his old food. Over about 10 days, I gradually increased the amount of Wholehearted and decreased the old food.
- Day 1-3: 75% old food, 25% Wholehearted
- Day 4-6: 50% old food, 50% Wholehearted
- Day 7-9: 25% old food, 75% Wholehearted
- Day 10+: 100% Wholehearted
I watched him like a hawk during this time, checking his, ahem, output for any signs of trouble. Luckily, he seemed to be tolerating it well!

The Results!
It’s been about two months now, and the difference is HUGE. His stools are finally normal (hallelujah!), he’s got more energy, and his coat looks amazing. No more itching or vomiting. I’m so relieved to have finally found something that works for him. It wasn’t cheap, but seeing him healthy and happy is worth every penny.
I’m not saying this food is a miracle cure for every dog, but if you’re struggling with food sensitivities, it might be worth talking to your vet about hydrolyzed protein options. It definitely made a world of difference for my furry friend!
