Okay, so I’ve got this big ol’ Rottweiler, right? A real sweetheart, but finding a bed that can handle him has been a real pain. I swear, this dog could sleep on a bed of nails and still find a way to destroy it in a week. I decided to share my experience about finding the best bed for my Rottweiler. Hope this can help you as well.

Started Simple, Failed Hard

First, I went to one of those big-box pet stores. You know the ones. Picked up a fluffy, comfy-looking bed. Felt good, looked good, price wasn’t terrible. My dog loved it! For about three days. Then, stuffing everywhere. He had chewed a hole right through the side, and it looked like it had snowed in my living room.

Tried Memory Foam, No Dice

Next, I thought, “Okay, maybe he needs something more… substantial.” So, I went online and ordered one of those memory foam beds. Figured it would be like those fancy mattresses humans use, right? Wrong. My dog didn’t chew this one, at least. But he did manage to flatten it out completely in a couple of weeks. It was like a pancake. Not exactly supportive for a hundred-pound dog.

Elevated Beds, Still Not Quite There

Then, I saw those elevated beds. They look kind of like cots. Thought maybe that would be the ticket, since it keeps them off the floor and it’s supposed to be good for their joints. Plus, they’re usually made of tough material. Well, he didn’t destroy this one either, but he just didn’t seem to like it much. He’d sleep on it, but he wasn’t exactly thrilled. Plus, it was kind of a pain to get on and off of, and I started to worry about him hurting himself when he is getting older.

Finally, The Winner!

So, after all that, I finally found a bed that seems to be working. It’s a heavy-duty, orthopedic bed. It is super thick, so it hasn’t flattened out. Also, it’s got this really tough, waterproof cover. I tried to put it off and wash it, it is easy to clean! And most importantly, he actually seems to love it! He sleeps on it all the time, and he looks really comfortable. I have had this bed for about 5 months, it still looks new!

What I Learned

  • Don’t go cheap. It’s just not worth it. You’ll end up spending more in the long run.
  • Memory foam isn’t everything. At least not for big, heavy dogs.
  • Elevated beds can be good, but they’re not for every dog. Especially if they’re older or have joint problems.
  • Heavy-duty and orthopedic is the way to go. At least for my Rottweiler.

Anyway, that’s my saga of finding a bed for my big guy. Hope it helps some of you other Rottweiler owners out there! It is really a long way to go, I am happy that I finally got the right bed for my dog!
