Okay, so let’s talk about breeding Maine Coon cats. It’s a journey, let me tell you!
First off, I started by looking for some breeders around my place. Wanted to get a feel for the whole scene, you know? I reached out to a few folks who had been doing this for a while, just to chat and pick their brains.

Then, I started hunting for a good stud. This part took a while. I mean, we’re talking about finding the right dad for the kittens, so it’s a big deal. I was looking at their health, their family history, all that jazz.
- Had to consider the stud fee, which is basically what you pay the stud’s owner for their cat’s, uh, services.
- It’s like compensating them for their time and effort, and for taking care of their awesome cat.
Finding my first breeding queen, man, that was something else. I learned two big words during this time: patience and mentor. Seriously, I can’t stress how much having someone experienced to guide me helped. They walked me through everything, from picking the right kitten to understanding what to expect.
Then came the waiting. My queen was still young when I got her, only 13 weeks. Cats, especially these big Maine Coons, they take their sweet time to grow up and be ready for breeding. We are talking months, people. During this phase, I made sure my little queen was living her best life – good food, check-ups, the whole nine yards.
Finally, the moment arrived
I introduced the stud to my queen, in a space where they could get to know each other. Cats are not ones you can rush, they need to get comfortable first. And then, nature took its course.
Waiting to find out if she was pregnant felt like forever! But it happened, she was expecting! Took care of her like a queen, pun intended. Regular vet visits, making sure she was eating right, and just giving her all the love in the world.
When the kittens finally arrived, it was such a joy. Tiny little furballs, all cute and demanding. Raising them was a whole new adventure. Weaning them, socializing them, making sure they were healthy and happy – it was a lot of work, but so rewarding.
Finding homes for them, that was another process. I was not just going to give them to anyone, wanted to make sure they went to good families who would love them. It was bittersweet, saying goodbye, but knowing they were going to great homes made it easier. Overall, breeding Maine Coons was quite the experience! Not always easy, but definitely something I will remember forever.
