Okay, so I’ve always been that person who’s, like, totally fascinated by animals, you know? And squirrels? They’re just so darn cute, right? So a few months back, I started noticing a bunch of them scurrying around my backyard. Figured I’d try to make friends. But then I thought, “What do these little guys even eat?” I didn’t wanna just toss out random stuff that might make them sick. So, I started doing some digging.
First thing I did was hit up the internet. I found that nuts are a pretty good thing for squirrels. And you know what? I had a big ol’ bag of mixed nuts sitting in my pantry! It’s a mix of almonds, walnuts, and some others, not meant for the squirrels, but for me to snack on at my office. My office is just five minutes walk from my home. I didn’t even think that those nuts might have salt, which I later realized might not be the best for them. But hey, I was just starting out, right?

Initial Attempts
So, I grabbed a handful of those nuts and tossed them out into the yard. I tried to do it where I usually saw the squirrels, you know, near the big oak tree. Then I waited. And waited some more. For a while, nothing. I almost gave up, thinking maybe they just didn’t like what I had offered.
Small Successes
But then, a little guy finally showed up! He sniffed around cautiously, then grabbed a walnut and scampered up the tree. I was so excited! I kept putting out nuts every day, and more and more squirrels started coming around. I even gave them names, like there was this one with a fluffy tail I called “Fluffy” and another one with a little scar on his ear I named “Scarface.”
More Research
After seeing how much they liked the nuts, I started wondering if I should be feeding them anything else. I did some more research online, and I found out that you can also give them those feed blocks, which I figure might be a more balanced diet for them. I haven’t tried this yet, but I’m definitely gonna look into it. I also learned that they need protein and fat to keep healthy.
Ongoing Observations
Now, it’s become a regular thing. Every morning, I put out a little pile of nuts for my squirrel buddies. It’s so cool to watch them come down and grab their breakfast. They are not afraid of me at all. I even see Fluffy and Scarface almost every day! I also noticed that they bury some of the nuts. I guess they’re saving them for later, which is pretty smart, right?
- Observation 1: They seem to really like walnuts and almonds.
- Observation 2: They’re most active in the morning.
- Observation 3: They’re not afraid of me anymore!
Anyway, it’s been a fun little experiment. I feel like I’ve made some new furry friends, and it’s cool to learn about what they eat and how they behave. I’m definitely gonna keep feeding them, but I’ll also do more research to make sure I’m giving them the best possible food. Maybe I’ll even try making my own squirrel food mix someday! Who knows?
