Okay, so you wanna know how long Golden Retrievers are pregnant for? Well, I went through this whole thing with my own dog, Bella, and let me tell you, it was a journey.
First off, I noticed Bella was acting a bit different. She was more tired than usual and wasn’t eating as much. I thought she might be sick, but then I remembered she had been around a male dog a few weeks back. That’s when it hit me – she might be pregnant!

So, I took her to the vet to get her checked out. I’ve heard you can do a blood test when dogs get 3 weeks. The vet did some tests and confirmed that she was indeed pregnant. He said that Goldens are usually pregnant for about 63 days, give or take. That’s like nine weeks, or a little over two months. Sounds a short time compared to human. Bella was already three weeks in, so we had about six more weeks to go. The vet gave me some advice on how to take care of her during her pregnancy, like what to feed her and how much exercise she should get.
- First few weeks:
I didn’t change much during the first few weeks. Bella was still pretty active, but I made sure she didn’t overdo it.
- Weeks 4-6: This is when she started to show. Her belly got bigger, and she was definitely slowing down. I started feeding her more, as the vet recommended, to make sure she and the puppies were getting enough nutrients.
- Final weeks: By the last few weeks, Bella was huge. She mostly just wanted to sleep and cuddle. I made her a comfy nesting area where she could relax.
When the time came, Bella went into labor. It was a long process, but in the end, she gave birth to eight healthy puppies! It was such an amazing experience to watch. I learned that first-time momma dogs usually have around eight puppies. Bella, being a young first-time mom, fit right into that average. I’ve also heard that sometimes younger dogs, especially if they’re not fully grown, can have a tougher time with pregnancy and delivery. Thankfully, Bella did great, but it’s something to keep in mind if you have a younger dog.
A Quick Recap
So, yeah, Golden Retrievers are pregnant for about 63 days, or nine weeks. It’s a pretty wild ride, but totally worth it in the end when you see those little furballs running around!
