Okay, so, let’s talk about something a bit… smelly. I’ve got this gorgeous Labrador Retriever, Luna. She’s a sweetheart, but lately, she’s been scooting her butt across the floor like she’s trying to win a race. Not exactly the picture of grace, you know? So I thought, “Alright, what’s up with my dog’s behind?”
Turns out, it’s these things called anal glands. Apparently, they’re like these little pouches on either side of her you-know-what, and they’re full of this stinky fluid. They’re supposed to empty out when she does her business, but sometimes, they don’t. And when that happens, oh boy, it’s not fun. They can get all irritated and swollen, and even infected.

First, I did some digging online, because when your dog is giving you the stink-eye (literally), you gotta figure things out. I learned that diet plays a big role. We feed Luna a mix of wet and dry food, but maybe that wasn’t doing the trick.
What to do?
- Changed Her Diet: I started adding more fiber to her meals. I heard that canned pumpkin is good, so I mixed a spoonful into her food. She seemed to like it, so that’s a win. I also read about fish oil, so I picked up some of that, too. And I was like, “Pumpkin seeds? Really?” But I guess they’re good too, so I added them as well.
- Kept an Eye on Her: I started paying more attention to her, uh, bathroom habits. Making sure things were looking normal, you know? And also keeping an eye out for more scooting or licking back there.
- Vet Visit: Look, I’m no vet, so when in doubt, I called up the expert. We scheduled a visit, and the vet confirmed it was the anal glands. He showed me how to check them (not the most pleasant experience, let me tell you), and he also said to keep up with the fiber. He weighs around 30kg, and I make sure he gets plenty of exercise.
So, yeah, it’s been a journey. It’s not the most glamorous part of dog ownership, but hey, you gotta do what you gotta do for your furry friend. I’m still learning, but I think we’re on the right track. Luna’s definitely scooting less, and that’s a relief for both of us. I’m just hoping we can avoid any serious issues down the line. It’s all about keeping those glands healthy, I guess. And maybe investing in some good air freshener, just in case.
