Okay, so, I’ve always been a cat person, and I’ve had a few different breeds over the years. But I’d been hearing a lot about Ragdolls, and the idea of a big, fluffy, laid-back cat really appealed to me. Plus, I’ve always loved black cats. So, I started doing some digging online, you know, just browsing around, looking at pictures and reading about them.
Turns out, finding a black Ragdoll kitten wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. I read somewhere that they’re not super common because the original breeder, this lady named Ann Baker, like, 50 years ago, she had these solid-colored cats in her breeding program, but they aren’t as popular as the ones with the pretty patterns.
I checked out a bunch of local shelters, called around a few places. One place I went to had like a dozen cats, but no Ragdolls. They were all cute, of course, but I had my heart set on a Ragdoll, especially a black one. Adopting one of them, they told me, would cost me, like, $50 to $200, which isn’t too bad. But since I wanted a Ragdoll, and a black one no less, I knew I’d have to look somewhere else.
So, then I started looking at breeders. It seemed like that’s where most folks get purebred Ragdolls. And man, the prices were way higher! Some of them were charging upwards of $400, even over $2 for a kitten! I mean, I get it, they’re purebred and all that, but still, that’s a lot of money.
Scouring for a Black Ragdoll
- Checked local shelters – no luck.
- Called around different rescues – still nothing.
- Started looking at breeders online – found some, but they were pricey!
I kept at it though, emailing a few different breeders, asking about their kittens, you know, sending pictures back and forth. Finally, I found one breeder that had a litter with a few solid black kittens, and they were in my state. I looked at the pics they sent and was immediately drawn to the male one. He was just so cute and I loved his fluffy tail. I immediately arranged to pay them a visit.
I drove over there on a Saturday, feeling pretty excited. And the little guy was even cuter in person! He was all playful and purring, and just a total sweetheart. I knew right away that I had to have him. I paid a sum that wasn’t too high, but it also wasn’t that cheap. But I was okay with it since I know it was all worth it.
So, now I’ve got this adorable black Ragdoll kitten. He’s settled in great, follows me everywhere, and is just the sweetest little dude. He’s definitely a lap cat, always wanting to cuddle. It was a bit of a hunt to find him, but totally worth it in the end. I named him Midnight, and he’s the best little buddy a guy could ask for.
