So, I’ve always been a cat person, and Ragdolls, man, they’re just something else. Those blue eyes, that fluffy fur… I was hooked. I started thinking, “Why not share the love?” and that’s how my little Ragdoll cattery adventure began here in Georgia.

First things first, I did a bunch of reading. I mean, I was already a Ragdoll fanatic, but breeding them is a whole different ball game. I learned about their health, their temperament, all that jazz. These cats are known for being super chill and affectionate, which is awesome, but they can have some heart issues, so you gotta be on top of that. They are also large round blue eyes, soft, thick coats, thick limbs, long tails, and soft bodies. Their color rings are commonly tricolor or bicolor. And, they are not easy to find.

Then, I found a mentor. This guy had been breeding Ragdolls for years, and he showed me the ropes. He explained everything from finding good breeding cats to caring for the kittens. It was eye-opening, and it made me realize this wasn’t just a hobby, it was a real commitment.

Next up, I had to get my place ready. These cats are big, and they need space to play and explore. I turned one of my spare rooms into a kitten paradise, complete with climbing structures, toys, and cozy beds. It’s like a feline jungle gym in there. The adults need space, too, so I made sure they had plenty of room to roam around the house. It has to be safe for them, though, so I spent a weekend going through every room to make sure they can’t hurt themselves or get into anything dangerous.

Finding the right breeding cats was a whole journey in itself. I wanted to make sure I was getting healthy, well-tempered cats from reputable breeders. I went to cat shows, talked to breeders all over the country, and finally found my perfect pair. These two are the king and queen of my little cattery, and they’re just the sweetest things. Most breeders seem to be registered with TICA. I made sure mine was as well.

The first litter, man, that was an experience. I was a nervous wreck, but it was also amazing. I watched them grow from tiny little furballs to playful kittens. Then I found that all of my kittens are born, babied, loved. I have to teach them the litterbox, introduce them to solid food, and play with them to socialize them. It’s a lot of work, but it’s so rewarding.

Finding good homes for them is the best part, though. I’m super picky about where my kittens go. I want to make sure they’re going to families who will love them as much as I do. I talk to potential adopters, get to know them, and make sure they understand what it takes to care for a Ragdoll. When they get a kitten, I know I’m not just selling a cat, I’m adding a member to their family. I also always get them to sign an agreement to keep them as indoor-only cats and never declaw them.

What I have learned from this experience?

  • The Cost: People always ask about the price. Yeah, Ragdolls aren’t cheap, usually $400 to $2,000. But you’re not just paying for a cute face. You’re paying for a healthy, well-socialized kitten that’s been raised with love.
  • Their Health: Like I said, these guys can have heart problems. Regular vet checkups are a must. It’s just part of being a responsible Ragdoll owner.
  • Their Personality: These cats are seriously the best. They’re so loving and gentle. They follow you around, cuddle up on the couch, and just want to be part of the family.

Starting this cattery has been a wild ride. It’s a lot of work, a lot of learning, and a whole lot of love. But seeing these kittens go to amazing homes makes it all worth it. I’m just happy to share the Ragdoll magic with the world, one fluffy kitten at a time.
