Alright, let’s talk about cat litter, you know, that stuff you put in the box for the cat to do its business. How much of that stuff you gotta put in there? Well, it ain’t rocket science, but you gotta get it right, or your house gonna stink somethin’ awful.
First off, the type of litter matters. You got that clumping kind and the non-clumping kind. If you got a little bitty kitty, a kitten, you should use the non-clumping stuff. Why? I don’t rightly know, someone told me once. Anyways, for that kind, you don’t need a whole lot. Maybe an inch or two, that’s about so high (gestures with fingers). You gotta change that stuff every day or two, ain’t no gettin’ around it. If you’re lazy and wait a few days, maybe put in a bit more, but don’t go over four days, or you’ll be sorry.

Now, for most folks, they use that clumping litter. You know, the kind that makes hard balls when the cat pees. That’s what I use for my old Tom. For that stuff, you need a bit more. Most cats, they like it about two or three inches deep. They like to dig around, you know, find the perfect spot to do their business. If your cat’s a real digger, like Tom, you might wanna put in three or four inches. Just see what your cat likes. They’ll let you know if it ain’t right, trust me.
- Non-clumping litter: 1-2 inches, change every 1-2 days.
- Clumping litter: 2-3 inches, or 3-4 inches for diggers.
Some folks, they say one inch is enough. Maybe for them, but I think that ain’t enough for most cats. They like to have somethin’ to dig in, you know? It’s like their little sandbox. And you gotta make sure there’s enough litter to soak up all the pee and cover up the poop. Otherwise, your house gonna smell like a barnyard.
And speakin’ of pee, how much a cat pees, that’s a whole ‘nother story. A healthy cat, they pee a few times a day, maybe two, maybe four. But if your cat’s peeing all the time, or not at all, somethin’ might be wrong. You might need to take ‘em to the vet. But that ain’t got nothin’ to do with how much litter you put in the box, mostly.
Now, don’t go thinkin’ more is always better. If you put too much litter in the box, the cat might not like it. They might kick it all over the place, makin’ a big mess. And then you gotta sweep it up, and nobody wants to do that. So just stick to the two or three inches, unless your cat tells you otherwise.
And you gotta remember to clean that box regular. I ain’t gonna tell you how often, ‘cause it depends on how many cats you got and how stinky they are. But you gotta scoop out the clumps and the poop every day, at least. And then you gotta dump out all the litter and wash the box every so often. Again, how often depends. If it starts to stink real bad, you waited too long. Use your nose, it’ll tell you.
So, to sum it up, ain’t no exact science to this cat litter thing. But for most folks, two or three inches of clumping litter is just right. And if your cat’s a digger, maybe a little more. Just watch your cat, they’ll let you know if you’re doin’ it wrong. And for goodness sake, keep that box clean! Nobody wants a stinky house, especially not me.
And one more thing, don’t go buyin’ that fancy, smelly litter. Cats don’t like that stuff. They got sensitive noses, you know. Just get the plain, unscented kind. It’s cheaper, too. And that’s important, ‘cause cat litter ain’t cheap these days. Everything costs too darn much, if you ask me.

There you have it, plain and simple. Now go take care of your cats, and keep that litter box clean.
