Alright, let’s talk about them Whippets, you know, those skinny dogs that run real fast. I ain’t no fancy dog expert or nothin’, but I’ve seen a thing or two, and I’ll tell ya what I know. If your Whippet’s got the runs, somethin’ ain’t right. The runs, that’s what we call it, when their poop is all watery and loose. Now, this ain’t somethin’ to take lightly. My neighbor’s Whippet had a bad case once, the poor thing was just miserable. I tell you what I heard. You can give ‘em somethin’ called Imodium, but you gotta be careful with it. They say one of them little squirts for every ten pounds the dog weighs, and not more than three times a day, for maybe a week, no more.
You gotta keep an eye on these dogs, they ain’t like those tough farm dogs we used to have. My nephew, he’s got one, all high-strung and sensitive. They get into things they shouldn’t, and next thing ya know, they’re sick as a dog. And speaking of sick dogs, those Whippets, they can get into all sorts of trouble. Just like people, some are born strong, and some are just kinda…weakly. You see some whippets running around like they own the place, all healthy and strong. Then there are others, poor things always catching something. I remember hearin’ somethin’ about them gettin’ heart problems, and their eyes ain’t always the best neither. I tell you what, if you’re thinkin’ about gettin’ one, you better do your homework, ya hear?

- Feeding ’em right: Don’t just give ’em any old scraps. They need good food, the kind that gives ‘em energy but doesn’t make ‘em sick.
- Keepin’ ‘em clean: Just like us, they need to be clean. Gotta keep them fleas and ticks off ’em, them little critters can cause all sorts of problems.
- Regular check-ups: Take ‘em to the vet, even if they seem fine. Better safe than sorry, I always say. That vet, he knows more than me and you put together about keepin’ them Whippets healthy. He will poke and prod but that is for the dog’s own good.
Now, let’s talk about what kind of dogs these Whippets are. They’re fast, I’ll give ’em that. Like little rockets, they are. But they ain’t always the smartest dogs, if you know what I mean. My grandbaby has one, it’s sweet as can be, but dumb as a box of rocks. Trainin’ ‘em takes patience, and a whole lotta treats. They’re kinda like kids, gotta tell ‘em the same thing over and over before they finally get it. And they’re sensitive too, you can’t yell at ‘em, they’ll just cower and look at you with those big, sad eyes. They need a soft hand, not a harsh one. They are not like the old hounds we used to hunt with. Those dogs were tough and didn’t need no pampering.
Some folks say Whippets are good family dogs, and I guess they are, if you got the time for ‘em. They need to run, gotta get that energy out somehow. If you keep ‘em cooped up all day, they’ll go stir-crazy. And they get cold easy, those skinny little things, so you gotta bundle ’em up in the wintertime. My friend has one of these Whippets. She knits little sweaters for it, looks a little ridiculous but the dog seems to like it. Whippets are different than the dogs I grew up with, that’s for sure. But they got their good points too, I guess. They’re gentle and loving, and they sure are pretty to look at when they’re running full tilt. Just be prepared to put in the work, that’s all I’m sayin’. They need a lot of attention, more than some other dogs I know. It’s like having another kid around the house. If you’re willing to give them the time and care they need, they’ll be good companions. Just remember what I told ya about keeping ‘em healthy and happy, and you’ll be alright. And don’t forget to talk to the vet, they know more than I do about these things. And that Imodium stuff? Use it sparingly, you hear? Too much of anything ain’t good for ya, dog or human.
And one more thing: If your Whippet starts acting weird, like real tired or not eating, get ‘em to the vet right away. Don’t wait around, hoping it’ll get better on its own. These dogs, they can go downhill fast. That’s what happened to my neighbor’s dog, waited too long and the poor thing didn’t make it. It’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to these fragile creatures.
