Well, now, lemme tell ya about these Maine Coon cats and their fur. You see, folks keep askin’ if there’s such a thing as a short-haired Maine Coon. I reckon it’s a fair question, seein’ as how most of them cats you see are all fluff and long hair.

Now, I ain’t no expert, mind you, but from what I gather, these Maine Coons, they’re known for their big size and that long, thick fur of theirs. Keeps ’em warm in them cold winters, I reckon. It’s like a big ol’ blanket they carry around with ’em. But, see, some folks, they don’t want all that hair, what with the sheddin’ and the brushin’. It’s a chore, they say.
- Size and Look: Them Maine Coons, they’re big fellas, you know? And that fur, it’s usually long and shaggy. But sometimes, you might see one that looks a bit different, fur ain’t so long.
- Fur Facts: That fur, it ain’t just for show. It keeps ’em warm when it’s cold and dry when it’s wet. But, like I said, some folks think it’s too much trouble.
- Short-Haired Question: So, are there short-haired Maine Coons? Well, some say yes and some say no. It’s kinda confusin’, if you ask me.
Some folks say a real Maine Coon always has long hair. That’s just how they are, they say. It’s in their blood, like a hound dog barkin’. But then you got others sayin’ you can find Maine Coons with shorter hair. Maybe it’s a mix, like mixin’ up a cake recipe.
Now, I reckon if you see a Maine Coon with short hair, it might just be a young ‘un. Sometimes them kittens, they don’t get all fluffy until they grow up a bit. Like a kid growin’ into their britches. Or, it could be they got mixed with another kind of cat, one with shorter hair. Happens all the time, animals mixin’ and matchin’.
Some folks say if you trim a Maine Coon’s hair, you can make it short. But that ain’t the same as bein’ born with short hair, is it? It’s like takin’ a long dress and cuttin’ it short, still started out long. But if it makes you happy, I reckon there ain’t no harm in it.
I heard tell these Maine Coons come from way back, maybe even from them Vikings. Imagine that! Vikings and cats. Anyways, they say them Vikings brought cats with ’em on their ships, cats with long hair to keep warm. And somehow them cats ended up in Maine and became what we call Maine Coons.

So, the long and short of it? Well, I ain’t sure there’s a real answer. Some folks say no, there ain’t no such thing as a short-haired Maine Coon, not a pure one anyways. Others say you might find one here and there, maybe a mix or maybe just a young ‘un. It’s a puzzle, that’s for sure. But one thing’s for certain, Maine Coons, long hair or short, they’re somethin’ special.
