Well now, if you’re lookin’ for the James Garfield dollar coin, let me tell you what I know about it. This here coin, it’s part of the U.S. Presidential Dollar series. It came out in 2011, you know, to honor that 20th president of the United States, James Garfield. Now, he didn’t last long in office, poor man. Got himself shot not long after he became president. But this coin’s been made to keep his memory alive, I guess.
Now, you won’t find this coin in any fancy condition most times. If you come across one, it’s probably been through a lot. Folks don’t tend to hold onto these things like they would a gold coin or somethin’. The average James Garfield dollar, just regular and used, it’s worth about a dollar. Ain’t no surprise there. It’s not a rare coin or anything special in that sense. You won’t be making a fortune off of it, that’s for sure.
But, now, if you find one in what they call “mint condition,” well, that’s a different story. These coins could fetch anywhere from four to six dollars, depending on how nice it looks. But trust me, that ain’t gonna happen too often. Most of the ones you’ll come across have been spent, scratched up, and seen better days.
The front of the coin has ol’ James Garfield’s portrait on it, lookin’ all serious, like he’s got business to tend to. Along with his name, you’ll also see the words “In God We Trust,” and “20th President” and “1881” – the year he became president and, sadly, the year he died too. On the back of the coin, you’ll find a picture of the Statue of Liberty. Ain’t that somethin’ to look at? Nice and patriotic, I reckon.
If you’re hopin’ to get one of these coins, you can get ’em at banks or even buy ’em from the U.S. Mint’s website, if you really wanna go through the hassle. They made 72 million of ‘em, so they’re not exactly hard to find. Some people, though, they might try to sell one of these in better condition for more money. You know, some folks like to collect these coins, even if they’re not worth much.
But if you’re askin’ if it’s worth more than a dollar most of the time, the answer is nope, not unless it’s in perfect shape. And even then, it’s just a little extra. Ain’t like you’re gonna retire off this coin anytime soon. It’s really more about the history, the story of the man on it. Garfield’s life was cut short, so these coins, they serve as a little reminder of that.
If you’re in the market for one of these, or if you’re just curious, well, now you know what to expect. Just don’t go around expectin’ to get rich off of it. It’s a nice little piece of American history, and that’s about it. You can find these coins pretty easily in regular circulation too. So don’t be fooled if someone tries to tell you it’s worth more than what it says on the face.
In the end, it’s just a coin. One dollar. But if you can find one that looks like it’s fresh out of the mint, well, maybe you could make a little extra off of it. Just remember, folks, don’t go spendin’ all your time chasin’ after them, there’s better things to do with your day than worry about a coin that’s worth barely more than its face value!
